CBWCHC Features its Facilities Department

(The Facilities teams based at CBWCHC locations (clockwise from top-right) in Manhattan; 137-43 45th Avenue, Flushing; 131-72 40th Road, Flushing; 136-26 37th Avenue, Flushing.)

The Facilities Department ensures the functionality, comfort, safety, sustainability, and efficiency of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center’s six buildings in Flushing, Queens and Lower Manhattan. It also provides staff members with the necessary day-to-day supplies to carry out their jobs. The department has 49 team members of skilled professionals that include maintenance technicians, facility managers, administrative personnel, and contracted services that efficiently manage our facilities.

“Health care environments are unique among buildings and workplaces,” said Kaushal Challa, CEO of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC). “They need to be equipped to deliver care safely and effectively, but they also need to be friendly and welcoming spaces for healing. We’re not just about medical care—we’re also about making sure our entire Health Center helps people feel better. Our colleagues in the Facilities Department are behind-the-scenes heroes who maintain safe, clean, and welcoming atmospheres throughout our six locations.”

Facilities is led by two Managers, Jenny Yang (Queens) and Winnie Lau (Manhattan). We asked them about how they see their department’s role within the organization.

CBWCHC: How does the Facilities Department contribute to the Health Center’s mission to provide high-quality and affordable health care to all?

Jenny & Winnie: By maintaining safe and efficient facilities, we create an environment where our staff can strive toward delivering the highest quality care. Our goal is to ensure that clinicians and staff members always have spaces that are well-equipped to provide services where our patients are safe and comfortable.

CBWCHC: What makes you most proud about your department’s work?

Jenny & Winnie: We take pride in the cleanliness and safety of the buildings and in making sure that any problems that arise are taken care of promptly. Our work represents the importance we put into the appearance and functionality of the Health Center.

CBWCHC: What are some of the challenges you face in your position?

Jenny & Winnie: Organizing our teams and multitasking can be challenging and chaotic in an environment where things are constantly moving. Some challenges involve unavoidable problems, such as building and equipment deterioration over time. Components in any facility will eventually need to be replaced, but taking the right precautions to preserve them and guard against damage helps us avoid more serious issues. Ultimately, our concern is the safety and comfort of anyone who steps foot in a CBWCHC facility.

CBWCHC: What do you like most about working for the Health Center?

Jenny & Winnie: We appreciate the Health Center’s commitment to serving the community by providing accessible health care services to all regardless of ability to pay, language spoken, or immigration history. Contributing to this noble cause through effective facilities management is incredibly fulfilling. We also enjoy the everyday interactions we have with people while performing our duties.

CBWCHC: What’s one more thing about your department that you’d like people to know?

Jenny & Winnie: We’d like people to know that the Facilities Department is always operating behind the scenes, diligently working to create an environment where patients can receive care comfortably and safely.
