New York State Assembly Grant Supports Breastfeeding Education at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center
New York State Assemblywoman Nily Rozic presented a $50,000 state grant to the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC) to support public education about the benefits of breastfeeding. The check presentation took place on Thursday at the Health Center's 131-72 40th Road location in Flushing, Queens.
Assemblywoman Rozic was joined by fellow Assemblymember Ron Kim to greet CBWCHC’s CEO, Kaushal Challa, and other Health Center leaders.
“New parents need all the support they can get and this new effort will meet families where they’re at, providing that extra support outside of the traditional health care system,” said Assemblywoman Rozic. “I am so proud to partner with the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, a true pioneer of affordable and culturally competent health care, to bring tailored educational resources and programming for new parents and their newborns.”
The grant, provided through Assemblywoman Rozic's discretionary funding and administered through the New York State Department of Health, will support a comprehensive bilingual education campaign. The initiative includes print materials, radio programming, newspaper articles, and social media content in both English and Chinese.
"This grant enables us to expand our vital health education work, reaching more families with crucial information about breastfeeding," said Dr. Hyoseong Nuna Kim, Chief Medical Officer at CBWCHC. "As both an administrator and pediatrician, I've seen firsthand how education empowers parents to make informed decisions about their children's health. This funding helps us continue our mission of providing culturally responsive health education to our community. We are deeply grateful to Assemblywoman Rozic for her support and commitment to maternal and newborn health."
The educational initiative represents a collaboration between CBWCHC's Pediatrics, OB/GYN, and Health Education departments. This project builds upon the Health Center's legacy of community health education, which began with the 1971 Chinatown Health Fair.
"The benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby are well-documented," said Dr. Samuel Wong, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at CBWCHC. "Breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition for infants while promoting bonding between mother and child. It also offers health advantages for mothers, including reduced risk of certain cancers and faster postpartum recovery."
The Health Center provides comprehensive care for mothers and babies at its Flushing and Lower Manhattan locations.
