Celebrate National Cholesterol Education Month with the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center

This September, the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center is raising awareness about National Cholesterol Education Month, highlighting the importance of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels and sharing steps to prevent or reduce high cholesterol.

What is Cholesterol and Why Does it Matter?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that plays an important role in your body. Produced in your liver and found in food like meat and eggs, cholesterol helps maintain cell membranes, produce hormones, and synthesize vitamin D.

However, too much cholesterol can be harmful. When excess cholesterol builds up in the arteries, it can restrict blood flow, and the supply of oxygen to your body’s organs, leading to serious health issues. High cholesterol usually has no symptoms until it causes problems, which is why it’s essential to regularly check your cholesterol levels and take preventative steps through diet, medication, and lifestyle changes.

The Two Types of Cholesterol:
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good” cholesterol, helps protect against heart disease.
  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad” cholesterol, raises your risk of heart disease.

When bad cholesterol levels are high, fat buildup on the walls of blood vessels can lead to clogged arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and even early death. Keeping track of and managing your cholesterol is key to improving your overall health.
