CBWCHC Turns the Spotlight on its Billing Department

a group of people standing next to each other

At the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC), the Billing department reviews diagnosis and treatment insurance codes and manages patient insurance claims, invoices, and payments. Serving more than 54,000 patients last year with nearly 270,000 office visits between 6 different locations, it’s fair to say that the 15 Billing staff members are kept on their toes but are happy to do their part advancing the Health Center’s mission.

Kaushal Challa, CEO of the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, shares, “The Billing team does essential work to advance our mission.  We offer comprehensive primary care, including many services and programs that are not reimbursed through conventional means.  As a result, it’s critical that we get reimbursed for every dollar that we are eligible for. It takes painstaking effort and attention to detail to get this right, because health plan requirements are complex and vary a lot. I’m so grateful for our Billing team — led by Miu Chan, our longest-serving Health Center employee! — for their efforts and professionalism. Because of them, we can continue to offer the highest quality care to ALL our patients, regardless of their insurance or ability to pay.”

CBWCHC spoke to Miu Chan, Director of Billing Administration for the Health Center about her department’s critical role within the Health Center

CBWCHC: How does your department contribute to the Health Center’s mission to provide high-quality and affordable health care to all?

Miu: The Billing Department works with patients that have commercial health insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare as well as those who are uninsured to ensure that the Health Center can provide the highest quality of care to patients regardless of their immigration history and ability to pay.

CBWCHC: What are some of your goals for the department?

Miu: Our goal is to continue ensuring accurate payment collection, coding, claim filing, and reimbursements to assist patients in accessing healthcare service at reasonable costs and as efficiently as possible.

CBWCHC: What are you most proud about your department’s work?

MIU: I am very proud that our department is very adaptable in learning new codes and insurance policies to ensure all our claims are correctly and efficiently sent out.

CBWCHC: What is one thing you’d like people to know about the work you do?

MIU: Billing is not as simple as it seems. It requires a lot of meticulous review and data entry to accurately send out claims in a timely manner.

CBWCHC: What do you like most about working for the Health Center?

MIU: Working at the Health Center is very fulfilling in that we get to work with all types of people and patients from all walks of life. Our team is like our second family, and we all share the same goal in doing the best that we can to support each other and the Health Center.
