CBWCHC Honors Its Nurses

(From left to right: Ka Fung (Anna) Fong, Shera Wong, and Ruby Lin)

At the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC), our mission is to provide high-quality and affordable health care to all, and our nurses are essential to fulfilling this mission. They have a wide range of clinical responsibilities—all centered on providing comprehensive care that is centered on the needs of each individual patient. Teamwork is fundamental to what they do, both with their nursing colleagues and with other staff members involved in a patient’s care. They are passionate about growing as health care professionals and about providing excellent care to our community.

“Nurses form the backbone of our Health Center and of our entire health care system,” said Holly Lee, CBWCHC’s Clinical Director. “In addition to providing care, our nurses educate patients and the community about health topics, participate in patient advocacy, and generally support patients and families as they make decisions about their care. Nurses are essential members of our health care team.”

To illustrate the diversity of their responsibilities during National Nurses Month, we are highlighting the dedication and contributions of three exceptional registered nurses (RNs) from different departments: Ka Fung (Anna) Fong in Internal Medicine, Ruby Lin in Pediatrics, and Shera Wong in Family Medicine. Here’s a glimpse into their work as part of our "Mission Driven" series.

What does a typical day look like for you in your department at CBWCHC?

Anna: As an RN for Internal Medicine, a typical day includes providing various services such as injections, medications, wound dressings, patient education, and follow-up phone calls.

Ruby: In Pediatrics, we start our day with a team huddle, which includes our Patient Services Representatives, nurses, Medical Assistants, Care Managers, and providers. Throughout the day, we encounter many cute kids and it brings us joy to help every one of them.

Shera: In Family Medicine, we handle routine vaccines, provide health education, perform lab work, and follow up with patients via phone calls.

How do you feel your work as an RN is connected to the Health Center’s mission of providing high-quality and affordable healthcare to all?

Anna: The services we provide are available to all patients, regardless of their status. The work we do as RNs is a key part of what makes our care excellent at CBWCHC.

Shera: As an essential member of the health care team, I play a vital role in the patient’s experience. I act as a liaison between the provider and patients, ensuring their health concerns are properly addressed.

What are some of your professional goals as a CBWCHC nurse?

Anna: I strive to keep up with continuing medical education and stay updated with the growing knowledge of medicine to provide the best care to our patients.

Shera: I plan to further my education and hope to achieve my nurse practitioner degree. I want to provide the same quality of care to the underserved Asian patient population and make a difference in someone’s health care, one patient at a time.

What makes you most proud about your work as a CBWCHC nurse?

Anna: I am proud to work with an organization whose mission aligns with my own views. I take pride in making a positive difference in people’s lives.

Ruby: We are making changes to people's lives. Patients come to us with health-related concerns, and our decisions and care are key to maintaining or improving their quality of life.

Shera: I love to see my work make a difference in a patient’s health. It’s gratifying to see their smile and their relief when they hear I speak their language. Helping underserved populations is truly rewarding.
