Breast Cancer Awareness: Why Early Detection Saves Lives
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women. About one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetimes, and one in 39 women will die from the disease.
The Importance of Screening and Early Detection
Breast cancer occurs when cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming tumors. If untreated, these tumors can spread to other parts of the body, becoming life-threatening.
While breast cancer can affect anyone, certain factors can increase a person’s risk. These include age, inherited genetic mutations, reproductive history, family history of breast cancer, and exposure to radiation. The most common sign of breast cancer is a painless lump, but early-stage breast cancer often has no symptoms at all.
This lack of symptoms in the early stages makes regular screening crucial. About 66% of breast cancers are diagnosed when they are still localized—before spreading to other parts of the body. When caught early, the five-year survival rate is 99%.
Breast cancer in its earliest stages is highly treatable. But only about 25% of women in the recommended age range are getting screened every two years. Women aged 40 or older should speak with their health care provider about breast cancer screenings. Those at higher risk may need to be screened more frequently.
