Celebrate National Immunization Awareness Month with the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center
This August, the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center is highlighting National Immunization Awareness Month. During this month we highlight the importance of vaccines in order to help keep you healthy and to prevent you from catching serious illness.
Why is Immunization Important?
Immunization against various viruses and bacteria has been shown to be effective in all ages. Getting vaccinated not only protects the individual who is immunized but also those in the community who are in contact with this individual.
For children, there are multiple immunizations, often in a series over a period of time, which are required before school entry. This immunization timeline is recommended according to national guidelines and is based on the child’s age.
For adults, there are vaccine boosters to several important conditions that are of concern for older age population such as tetanus, pertussis, and shingles. Additionally, there are periodic updates to vaccines such as the influenza virus and COVID virus vaccine which are needed to combat these serious infections.
Immunizations have made real impacts in the United States and the world. They have contributed to the eradication of smallpox in the world and greatly reduced the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our Commitment to Preventative Health
The Charles B. Wang Community Health Center has been a strong partner with the New York State Department of Health to offer vaccines at no cost or low cost to our patients and community. We are part of national based programs that enable access to those in our community who have not been able to get timely immunizations.
“Vaccinations are one of the key pillars of good health for you and your family. Vaccines are safe and effective. Do not delay getting the routine vaccinations for your child and check yearly to see if you may need updates on your immunization to stay protected,” says Loretta Au, MD, MPH, Chief of Pediatrics, Manhattan.
Since 1971, the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center has been dedicated to providing vital health care services, including access to vaccinations, to Asian Americans and underserved communities. Join us on 8/17 in Flushing and 8/24 in Chinatown for fun educational games and information regarding immunizations required for school! The event is free for all and no registration is required.
Visit us in Flushing, Queens or Lower Manhattan to learn more about our immunization services and see if you are missing any recommended vaccines. Together, let’s celebrate National Immunization Awareness Month and take the first step toward protecting ourselves as well as our community today!
