Meet the 2022 Project AHEAD Interns
Project AHEAD (Asian Health Education and Development) is a nine-week internship that provides firsthand training and experience to undergraduate students and recent graduates interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. The internship facilitates increased awareness and understanding of the historical and present issues shaping the health of Asian American populations. Each year, interns work on a Community Health Project (CHP) that addresses the community’s most pressing health needs.
Meet the 2022 Project AHEAD cohort as they continue this long-standing tradition with their CHP, an evaluation study of the implementation and effectiveness of telehealth service delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings from the study will help inform telehealth-specific strategic planning decisions and clinical service improvement efforts made by the Health Center.

Cindy is a rising junior at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor on the pre-PA track, majoring in biopsychology, neuroscience, and cognition with a minor in gender and health. Her women’s health and developmental psychology classes inspired her to look deeper into the discrepancies of health issues between different genders and ethnicities. Working as a canvasser with Test and Trace Corps during the pandemic has also influenced her to examine the importance of working with underserved populations and ensure that they are included and protected. Outside of academics, Cindy loves watching historical documentaries and learning about ancient civilizations.

Samantha is a rising senior at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, majoring in biology and minoring in psychology and healthcare administration. Her interest in medicine and public health stems from teaching CPR and first aid classes and assisting with EMT classes. Samantha volunteers with her town’s EMT squad during her summers, which she thoroughly enjoys as it gives her the opportunity to give back to her community. During the school year, Samantha is involved with her university’s taekwondo club as a risk manager and social media chair; she is also the treasurer of the scuba diving club. She intends to pursue medical school after college and become a physician specializing in internal medicine, emergency medicine, or immunology.

Skylar is a 2022 graduate of Binghamton University, where she majored in biological sciences and minored in French. On campus, he is also a part of Team Sunrise, which fundraises for Camp Sunrise, a camp dedicated to children with cancer. During his time off from college, he volunteers with Rescue Leftover Cuisine and his local COVID testing sites. Xiaoshun is also an avid weightlifter and overall fitness enthusiast. She currently works as a research assistant in the Fani Lab studying the use of mind-body interventions to target attentional control in dissociative trauma-exposed populations. Outside of university, she enjoys volunteering with City Harvest, Hands On Atlanta, and Grady’s Food as Medicine program, addressing chronic disease and food insecurity among patients and the community. Amanda is passionate about improving cultural competence to reduce health disparities, especially in Asian-American communities. After graduation, she hopes to attend medical school and become a physician.

Matthew is a rising senior at Harvard College, pursuing a degree in economics to study inefficiencies in the current healthcare system. He currently works as a research assistant at the Zomorrodi Lab, where he helps conduct computational analysis of the gut microbiota and its relationship to colorectal cancer. By studying the effects of different diets and institutions, Matthew hopes to eventually expand his research to global health. Matthew grew up around the Chinatown healthcare community and is excited to participate in Project AHEAD and serve the community that shaped his upbringing.

At Syracuse, Erica is the vice president of the Alpha Xi charter of Sigma Psi Zeta, whose philanthropy seeks to combat violence against women. She also volunteered at Crouse Hospital in the oncology department and led social events to promote substance-free late night programming for an organization called Orange After Dark. She gets her passion for community healthcare from her parents, who have struggled with language barriers, long travels, and harsh treatments to receive healthcare. Their experiences motivate Erica to give back to the Asian American community and fight for equal healthcare.

Drawing upon her interdisciplinary experience in philosophy, Asian American studies, and medicine, she is passionate about resolving upstream causes of health inequities in the Southeast Asian community. For the future, she is looking into MD-MPH programs to best serve the Vietnamese American community as a primary care physician. Wendy Liu – 2022 Project AHEAD Coordinator
Wendy earned her BA from Vassar College and is a recent MPH graduate from Columbia, where she focused her studies on designing, implementing, and evaluating theory- and evidence-based interventions. Wendy aims to be a public health advocate and educator who centers accessibility, care, and informed research, including lived experiences, in her practice, much of which was influenced by her time as a Project AHEAD intern in 2015. She is excited to be back at the Health Center as a Program Coordinator and this year’s Project AHEAD coordinator.
